March 7, 2024Four suspects are expected to appear in Ermelo Magistrate’s Court today. The suspects are between the ages of 25 and 44 years they were arrested for their alleged involvement in illegal mining in Ermelo.
A dedicated team of operation Vala Umgodi members reacted to intelligent driven information, which was operationalised on Tuesday night.
On the team’s arrival at the scene, it is alleged that number of people fled the scene. However, the said members managed to corner four suspects who were immediately arrested on charges of illegal mining.
Out of the four suspects, two were found with a handgun with 25 rounds. One suspect was arrested with a truck fully loaded with coal, and the forth suspect was arrested while he was in a light delivery vehicle.
Items taken include, amongst other things, a three ton truck loaded with coal, a front loader, a light delivery vehicle, and a sedan. Enquiries are also made on the 34-ton side tipper truck that was also found at the scene.
The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, has welcomed the arrest. “The team has worked hard and this success should send a clear message to those who think they can take chances and carry out illegal activities in the mines that they will be arrested and face the full might of the law, ” warned the General.
