On Thursday, July 18, 2024, the Secunda Hawks and Secunda K9 Unit arrested five Nigerian nationals in Evander. The men, aged between 34 and 48, were taken into custody for drug dealing, interfering with police work, and immigration violations.
The arrests came after police received information about a house in Evander where drugs were allegedly being sold. A search warrant was issued and executed, leading to the discovery of drugs in two outside rooms. Two suspects were arrested for drug dealing. During the arrests, the homeowner interfered with police duties and was also arrested. Two other men in the house were found without passports or permits to be in South Africa, leading to their arrests as well.
The five suspects were held in custody and were scheduled to appear in Evander Magistrate Court on Friday, July 19, 2024. Police seized rock cocaine, crystal meth, cat, mandrax, and dagga, with a total street value estimated at R34,567. Major General Gerber, Provincial Head of the Hawks, praised the team for their excellent work and emphasized the importance of collaboration between different law enforcement units. He stated that the Hawks, together with community partners, will continue to fight against drug abuse to protect vulnerable members of society.
