February 8, 2024Five suspects aged 25 to 69 are expected to appear in the Komatipoort Magistrate’s
Court today for possession of four unlicensed rifles with ammunition. The accused were
arrested Tuesday evening during a routine patrol stop by Durban Harbour members
deployed in Mpumalanga.
When officers searched the suspects’ Toyota Landcruiser they uncovered four
concealed rifles with ammo hidden behind the seats. None of the five occupants could
produce firearm licenses leading to charges of illegal possession of firearms and ammo.
The arrests resulted from a normal patrol along the Mananga/Coopersdal turnoff in
Komatipoort. Officers stopped the Landcruiser carrying the five men and discovered the
unlicensed cache upon searching the vehicle.
Provincial Commissioner Lt. General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela praised the
officers for apprehending the suspects and removing the illegal weapons. “We applaud
SAPS members for the job well done, in removing unlicensed firearms from the wrong
hands so as to save lives,” Manamela stated.
The seizure of four rifles and ammo during a routine patrol highlights the need for
continued efforts by SAPS to detect and deter illegal firearms. Getting four unregistered
guns off the streets prevents them from being used in violent crimes. The Komatipoort
court appearance on Wednesday will now hold the five suspects accountable for the
serious charges.
