March 26, 2024According to information received , it is said that a group of armed men stormed into a shop which caused some patrons to panic as a result of the presence of suspects. Suddenly, one of these armed men allegedly pointed the complainant with a firearm. It is said that they held the victims at hostage and robbed the complainant of an undisclosed amount of cash as well as a mobile phone.
Thereafter, the suspects fled the scene with the stolen items . Earlier that day, the complainant indicated that he noticed a suspicious blue Toyota Corolla, which was seen parked next to the shop.
After the incident occurred, a good citizen is said to have realized that the shop was actually robbed, and he took it upon himself to follow the vehicle used by the suspects.
A few moments later, he fortunately noticed a Police vehicle and immediately informed the men and women in Blue about the robbery that had just occurred.
In turn, the Police responded swiftly and spotted a Toyota Corolla as well as a Hyundai. It was at this point when the five suspects were arrested. It is further said that Police recovered some cash from the the suspects. Police are convinced that the recovered money could have been stolen during the robbery.
No shots were reportedly fired during the arrest of the suspects. A case of business was opened and during the tour of the investigation, police discovered that the five suspects are Malawian nationals who did not have valid documentation to be in South Africa.
The investigators are therefore working collaborately with officials from the Department of Home Affairs to a certain their status in the country. The five suspects are faced with a charge of business robbery as well as contravention of the Immigration Act of South Africa.
The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela has commended the exceptional work done by the good citizen in ensuring that the alleged robbers do not get away by alerting the authorities about the incident. The General further thanked the members for their swift response, which resulted in the arrest of the suspects. “Thanks to the whistle-blower for his efforts and this is the type of people that we need, those who do not keep quiet when a crime is committed but act by informing the authorities so that there is quick response loke in this instance. The result speaks volume, ” said the General.
The suspects, aged between 25 and 39 are expected to appear at Emalahleni Magistrate’s Court on Monday after being arrested by the Police in Witbank few minutes after a business robbery was staged by a group of suspects in Witbank on Friday.
