Mpumalanga Government Offices Left in Darkness
February 7, 2025Pieter Johannes Grobler spent a night in custody before being released on R8,000 bail at the Secunda Magistrate’s Court on 6 February 2025.
Grobler was arrested by the Hawks’ Secunda-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit on 5 February 2025, following a tip-off about hazardous food storage on his farm. Law enforcement, along with SAPS and Govan Mbeki Local Municipality Health Inspectors, investigated the premises and discovered two warehouses containing four cold rooms filled with expired and rotten food, including meat, chicken, and dairy products.

Following his court appearance, Grobler’s case was postponed to 27 March 2025 for further investigation. The court ordered him to report to Charl Cillier SAPS every Monday between 08:00 and 18:00 and to surrender his travel documents until further notice.
Mpumalanga’s Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation head, Major General Nico Gerber, praised the officers for preventing the sale of unsafe food, saying the investigation aims to uncover other individuals involved in the operation.
