The last of four men involved in a brutal farm attack in Limpopo in 2020 has been handed
two life sentences and an additional 55 years in prison. Christopher Mokgomutsi, 42, was
sentenced by the Limpopo High Court in Polokwane on Friday for his role in the August 3,
2020 attack on a farmer couple at Draaifontein farm in the Molemole Local Municipality.
“Christopher Mokgomutsi (42) was sentenced to two life terms and a combined 55 years
imprisonment for his involvement in a farm attack at Draaifontein farm in the Molemole Local
Municipality in Limpopo on August 3, 2020,” said Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant
General Thembi Hadebe, welcoming the sentences.
During the attack, the four assailants assaulted the 62-year-old farmer, leaving him
unconscious, while two of them raped his 61-year-old wife. They stole a hunting rifle, pistol,
and the couple’s bakkie before fleeing. Police cornered them at the Polokwane traffic circle,
where a shootout ensued resulting in one suspect’s death.
“When police attempted to stop the vehicle, the men fired shots at the police, who retaliated,
resulting in one suspect’s death and the arrest of the other three,” Hadebe stated.
Two of Mokgomutsi’s co-accused, Aaron Mabena and Nicolus Tlou, previously pleaded
guilty and were sentenced to 10 years and life imprisonment respectively in 2021. The case
against Mokgomutsi was investigated by Detective Warrant Officer Khomotjo Morathi.
Mokgomutsi received life sentences for rape and murder, 20 years for robbery with
aggravating circumstances, 10 years each for two counts of attempted murder and
possession of a firearm, and 5 years for ammunition possession.
“Hadebe commended the investigative team’s hard work that led to justice being served,”
the statement said.
The sentences aim to serve as a deterrent against the prevalent crime of farm attacks and
associated violent offences in the province.
