March 12, 2024Phumlile Shabangu Modipane, the owner of The Vibe Lifestyle Pub and Restaurant, known
as the White House, appeared before the Barberton Magistrate’s Court on Monday, March 4.
She faces charges of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm following
allegations made by an employee, Enock Sibitane.
According to reports, Sibitane claimed that Modipane and her bouncers severely assaulted
him after accusing him of stealing R15,000. He alleged that they kidnapped him from a mine
in Barberton, took him to Lekazi against his will, and beat him before tying him to a
tombstone in a graveyard in Hlabekisa, where the assault continued.
However, Modipane’s family has denied the allegations against her, stating that she was in
Mozambique when the incident allegedly occurred. The family claims that Modipane sent her
driver, Thapelo Mokoena, to inquire about the missing money from Sibitane, and she was
unaware of any altercation between the two until the matter circulated on social media.
Modipane confirmed knowing Sibitane and claimed that he had indeed stolen the R15,000.
During her court appearance, Modipane was granted R1,000 bail and faces charges of
assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Her case was postponed until April 10.
While Sibitane’s allegations paint a disturbing picture, the family’s denial highlights the need
for a thorough investigation into the matter.
As the case proceeds, more details may emerge to shed light on the events and determine the veracity of the claims made by both parties.
