Explosives Found in Foreigner’s Shop

A 35-year-old Zimbabwean national was arrested in Mpumalanga during a tactical operation on Friday for possession of explosives and contravening the Immigration Act.

The Hawks, K9 unit and bomb disposal team followed up on information leading them to a residential shop in Emjindeni, Barberton owned by the foreign suspect.

Upon searching the premises, they uncovered hidden electronic detonators, shock tube assemblies, blasting cartridges, industrial drill bits and over 100 meters of detonating cord.

The suspect was immediately arrested and detained, awaiting his first court appearance in Barberton on Monday.

Initial investigations revealed the explosives were imported from Zimbabwe and were being sold primarily to illegal miners and criminals.

Hawks provincial head Major General Gerber praised the successful collaborative effort in seizing the illegal explosives commonly used in serious crimes. He stated the Hawks are committed to ongoing operations with stakeholders to ensure community safety.

The investigation is ongoing and more arrests are expected. The public is urged to report any suspicious explosive materials or activities to the authorities. Removing these dangerous items from the wrong hands will help protect lives.
