October 31, 2024The Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) has confirmed that a male lion has escaped its enclosure near Mbombela, sparking an ongoing search and calls for public caution. Authorities urge residents, particularly those near The Rest Estate, to remain vigilant as efforts to locate the animal continue.
According to MTPA spokesperson Simphiwe Shungube, the lion was last seen on security footage from The Rest Estate on Wednesday afternoon. “This is confirmed by footage from The Rest Estate control room,” Shungube said, adding that MTPA teams have been actively tracking the animal since the early hours of Wednesday morning.
To aid the search, MTPA officials have deployed a thermal imaging drone, scouring the area continuously from 2:00 a.m. Wednesday. Despite thorough efforts, the lion has yet to be located. Shungube assured the public that the agency would persist in its efforts until the animal is safely contained.
Residents are advised to stay calm, alert, and report any sightings immediately. The MTPA has provided a direct contact, Louw Steryn, for urgent reports regarding the escaped lion.
