Two suspected armed robbers from Barberton were arrested near Absa Square in Mbombela on January 11.
Divergent Ops received a tip-off about a minibus taxi transporting suspected armed robbers and drug dealers from Barberton to Mbombela. “The taxi was stopped at the Puma fuel station, and the suspects were questioned. SAPS Crime Intelligence assisted with searches and interrogation,” said Ghost from Divergent Ops.
During questioning, it was revealed that one of the suspects’ residences in Barberton was being used to store firearms. Police recovered two firearms and explosives at the location.
The suspects then led authorities to two additional houses occupied by alleged zama zamas. At the first hideout, one armed suspect escaped as the team approached. Six zama zamas were arrested at the second house and taken to Barberton Police Station.
The operation continued in Mbombela, where police accompanied Divergent Ops to a guest house in Sonheuwel, where the suspects had booked a four-day stay. Eight suspects were arrested in total.
Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane confirmed the arrests and stated that further information would be released as investigations continue.
