On 27 January, several buses were set ablaze at different Putco depots in Mpumalanga’s Nkangala district, leading to the destruction of 51 buses across multiple locations.
A group of armed suspects, traveling in a white Toyota Quantum, a Mercedes Benz Vito, and a Volkswagen Polo, launched coordinated attacks at Moloto (Kwamhlanga policing precinct), Siyabuswa, Thabane, and Maphotla. During the incident, some Putco employees were injured, including a security guard who sustained a gunshot wound and is currently receiving medical treatment. Another employee was reportedly assaulted by the intruders.
Police swiftly launched an investigation, and on 28 January, a special task team under the leadership of acting provincial commissioner Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi arrested two suspects.
According to Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, the arrested individuals were wearing balaclavas and black clothing during the attacks and allegedly held Putco employees at gunpoint. One of the suspects was found in possession of a stolen mobile phone and a magazine for a 9mm pistol (without ammunition).
The police believe the two arrested individuals were directly involved in the bus depot attacks, and investigations are ongoing. Major General Mkhwanazi commended the SAPS team for their swift response, expressing confidence that further breakthroughs would follow.
