Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Ronwen Williams and the national team won accolades at the Africa Cup
of Nations on Sunday. Williams was awarded the Golden Glove as the best goalkeeper of the
tournament, while Bafana claimed the Fair Play Award.
The Mamelodi Sundowns captain starred for Bafana throughout AFCON. He kept five clean sheets in
seven matches and made brilliant saves, but stood out most in two penalty shootouts. Against Cape
Verde in the quarterfinals, Williams became the first keeper in an AFCON to save four of the first five
penalties in a shootout. In the bronze medal match, he saved two more penalties as Bafana rallied to
defeat DR Congo for third place.
“I’m really happy we got something to show for the hard work,” Williams said. “It’s an honor to win
these awards.”
Bafana also won the Fair Play Award for exhibiting excellent sportsmanship and discipline
throughout the tournament.
“The team showed great spirit and character in how they conducted themselves,” coach Hugo Broos
said. “This award recognizes those values.”
The awards cap a historic AFCON for Bafana Bafana, as they claimed their first medal since 1998.
