Tsonga Musician Turns Talent Into Brand

 The rhythmic pulse of Tsonga music is finding a fresh outlet in the work of Pholoso Quietness Mhlongo, widely known as Pholoso Musician.

Hailing from the rural town of Bushbuckridge, the young artist has progressed beyond local performances to build a brand that blends traditional sounds with modern production.

Pholoso’s recent single, Munhu wa mina – the latest track within his self-styled Xigaza xa ma2K genre – showcases his talent for uniting heritage melodies with contemporary beats.

The song has resonated across age groups, cementing his reputation as a trailblazer in South Africa’s diverse music landscape.

His musical journey began in the late 2000s, singing in his church choir. “I gained recognition for being one of the best vocalists in church,” he told Timeless News.

“When I moved to high school, I became popular among my peers for my singing.” He also learnt to play the guitar during services and later introduced beat-boxing – locally called “based box” – which helped him stand out.

His first major release, the love-song NgaPhandle Kwakho, arrived in 2022 under the production of Candisonic, followed by Hita Humelela in 2023.

In 2024, a collaboration with Phalaborwa star Mthimbani on Mhani wa mina earned critical praise and a nomination for Best Emerging Artist at the Munghana Lonene Music Awards, a regional honour recognising Limpopo talent.

Beyond the studio, Pholoso has ventured into literature and entrepreneurship. In 2023 he co-authored the Tsonga book Gingirikani with Precious Mhlava and later published Words Can Change Your Life, a motivational work aimed at inspiring young readers.

That same year he launched the clothing label “Make Everything Possible” (MEP), a brand created to embody resilience and ambition. “I started with nothing but had a dream. It’s now a source of inspiration for many young people, especially in my village of Saselani,” he said.

When asked about his drive, Pholoso summed it up simply: “I believe in the power of working hard and chasing dreams in the music industry. If you’re willing to put in the hours, the doors start opening.”

Balancing music, writing and his fashion line, he lives by a mantra of hard work, humility and perseverance. His story is already serving as a blueprint for aspiring artists and entrepreneurs in rural South Africa, proving that cultural roots can translate into national influence.
