Suspects Arrested with Dagga Worth R1.2 Million

Two men, aged 23 and 30, were arrested on 26 January after being found in possession of dagga valued at approximately R1.2 million. The incident occurred on the R538 road near Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA).

Members of the White River Flying Squad Unit were conducting routine patrols when they noticed a white Toyota Quantum with two occupants acting suspiciously. Officers stopped the vehicle for a search, during which they discovered 50 compressed bags of dagga, weighing around 1,020 kilograms.

The suspects have been charged with dealing in dagga. Additionally, one suspect, who is from the Kingdom of Eswatini, faces an extra charge for contravening South Africa’s Immigration Act, as he did not have valid documentation to be in the country. The police have confirmed that they are working with officials from the Department of Home Affairs to address the immigration matter.

Both suspects are set to appear in the White River Magistrate’s Court in the coming days.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr.) Zeph Mkhwanazi, praised the officers for their diligence and quick action in apprehending the suspects. "By now, perpetrators should know there is no space for criminal activities. Our members will continue working tirelessly to ensure our roads are safe and free of crime," Mkhwanazi stated.
