Turn Your Garden into a Winner with Shoprite
Shoprite has launched the first-ever Act For Change Food Garden Competition, shining a light on community food gardens across South Africa and offering prizes worth R1 million in tailored support.
nnnnFrom rooftops to rural villages, schoolyards to township corners, food gardens are bringing people together, tackling hunger, and building sustainable livelihoods. Shoprite’s new competition aims to celebrate these local heroes and strengthen their work.
nnnnOver the past ten years, Shoprite has invested in almost 300 food gardens. These gardens produced more than 106 000 kg of fresh vegetables last year while also helping people learn farming skills and earn an income from selling surplus produce.
nnnnThe competition is open to all community food gardens in South Africa. Winners will receive support based on their specific needs – including irrigation systems, fencing, shade netting, or training.

- 1st prize: Support valued at R225 000 nnnn
- 2nd prize: R200 000 nnnn
- 3rd prize: R170 000 nnnn
- 4th prize: R150 000 nnnn
- 5th prize: R130 000 nnnn
- 6th prize: R120 000 n

- In Orange Farm, Gauteng, the Vukasechaba Massive Fresh Produce Co-op supplies hospitals like Chris Hani Baragwanath after installing irrigation systems with Shoprite’s help, feeding over 200 people. n
