Schools Told Not to Withhold Report Cards
The Mpumalanga Department of Education has issued a firm reminder to all schools that learner report cards may not be withheld under any circumstances. This directive applies to both public and independent schools, in line with Section 29(12) of the National Protocol on Assessment (Grades R–12).
nnnnAccording to the Department, a report card is an essential document that provides parents and guardians with a full picture of a learner’s academic performance. It offers detailed feedback across subjects, highlighting achievements as well as areas that require improvement. Schools are therefore urged to ensure that parents receive these documents promptly at the end of each term.
nnnnParents have been encouraged to report any school that refuses to release a report card to the nearest circuit office. The Department also reminded schools to use proper administrative processes when dealing with parental obligations, without disadvantaging learners or restricting their access to academic records.
nnnnMEC for Education, Ms Lindi Masina, emphasised the importance of accuracy and transparency in the issuing of report cards. “Parents have the right to receive a full and accurate account of their children’s performance throughout the year. We therefore urge all schools to refrain from withholding learner report cards for any reason,” she said.
nnnnThe Department also congratulated learners for reaching the end of the academic year. Those who did not pass are encouraged to remain positive, with the reminder that support is available and that setbacks can lead to new opportunities.
nnnnParents were urged to foster a calm and supportive home environment as learners receive their results. Schools across the province will reopen on Wednesday, 14 January 2026.
