Ramaphosa Tells ANC to Learn from DA

President Cyril Ramaphosa has sparked debate after urging ANC councillors to learn from the Democratic Alliance (DA) on improving local governance.

Speaking to more than 4,000 ANC councillors in Johannesburg, Ramaphosa admitted that some municipalities were “going backwards instead of forwards” and encouraged leaders to study best practices from DA-run councils. “We must not be afraid to learn from them,” he said.

Critics argue the remarks handed the DA a political advantage by openly praising its performance. Some ANC members fear his words could demoralise councillors and voters in poorly performing municipalities.

Supporters, however, see the move as bold leadership. Analysts say Ramaphosa should be commended for frankness and accountability. “We cannot continue doing things the same way and expect different results,” he told councillors, calling for urgent reforms to improve service delivery.

While the remarks have drawn mixed reactions, they could mark a turning point. If the ANC uses this moment to reform and rebuild trust, it may strengthen its position. If not, critics warn, the DA could benefit from what some have called a “silver platter” opportunity.
