Mpumalanga Premier Mandla Ndlovu delivered the State of the Province Address (SOPA) 2025 on 28 February, outlining key government priorities, economic strategies, and infrastructure projects aimed at improving the province’s growth and sustainability.

Economic Growth and Job Creation

The Medium-Term Development Plan (MTDP) 2025-2029 prioritises economic growth, job creation, and reducing poverty. The province aims for a 3% economic growth rate, with efforts to attract R50 billion in domestic and foreign investments. The government is targeting 60,000 job opportunities annually, with a focus on the agriculture, mining, tourism, and renewable energy sectors.

To combat youth unemployment, which has risen to 50%, initiatives such as the Premier’s Youth Development Fund have been launched, funding 238 youth-owned enterprises with R257.9 million.

Infrastructure Development

Mpumalanga is undergoing major infrastructure upgrades, including road expansions, school construction, and healthcare facilities. The province aims to upgrade 75% of roads to 'good' condition by 2031. The Moloto Road upgrade, R40 expansion, and new bridges are among key transport projects.

The Mpumalanga International Fresh Produce Market is set to launch in April 2025, creating 156 direct jobs and providing access to 150,000 small-scale farmers. Agri-hubs in Mkhuhlu, Mkhondo, and Dr JS Moroka will support local farmers and school nutrition programmes.

To boost food security, the Mpumalanga Government Nutrition Sourcing Bill aims to empower emerging farmers by ensuring consistent markets for their produce.

In response to rising gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide, the province launched the Mpumalanga Provincial Council on GBV. The Khuseleka One-Stop Centre will provide protection and support for GBV victims.

To enhance security, police stations now have Victim-Friendly Rooms, and traffic officers are deployed 24/7 to improve road safety. The Highway Patrol launched in 2024 has already led to reductions in CIT robberies.
