Mpumalanga Education Fraud: 15 Granted Bail
The prosecution in a multimillion-rand tender fraud case at the Mpumalanga Department of Education has alleged that service providers were used to siphon off public funds.
nnnnOn Tuesday, several of the 36 suspects linked to the scandal appeared at the Mbombela Magistrates Court, where bail ranging from R5,000 to R50,000 was granted.
nnnnThe State claims more than 20 companies were involved in the irregular R113 million tender scheme. Investigations by the Hawks revealed that service providers were hand-picked with no official procedure followed. Some of the accused are directors of these entities.
nnnnState prosecutor Prenishna Jagganath detailed the alleged irregularities, citing that “Accused 17 is a director of Makhayeni Sint; he was paid a total of 4.5 million from the department.” She added that more entities were involved than the number of accused: “When the State goes to trial with this, it will be 40 warm bodies, as I’ve indicated, and 69 corporate entities. These accused are sitting before you as service providers in their capacities as directors, and some of them will be personal capacities where they’ve received monies.”
nnnnBail proceedings are ongoing at the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court for 38 accused facing charges linked to the R114 million Mpumalanga Education Department fraud case.
nnnnSince the trial commenced on Monday, 15 of the accused have been granted bail, with the process expected to continue over the coming days.
nnnnThis case underscores growing concerns over tender irregularities and the use of service providers to allegedly exploit public funds in the province.
