MEC Urges Caution on Roads Amid Heavy Rain

Mpumalanga’s MEC for Public Works, Roads and Transport, Thulasizwe Thomo, has urged all road users, particularly public transport operators, to exercise extreme caution as heavy rains continue across the province this week.

Highlighting the dangers of wet and slippery roads, MEC Thomo warned that these conditions pose a serious risk of accidents, especially for buses and taxis carrying large numbers of passengers.

“We call upon all road users to put safety first during this period. Reduce speed, keep a safe following distance, switch on headlights for visibility, and avoid overtaking in dangerous spots. Public transport operators must remember they are responsible not only for their own lives but also for the lives of many passengers who rely on them daily,” said MEC Thomo.

The Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport has also appealed to communities to report any damaged roads or blocked drainage to authorities, so that prompt interventions can be made.

“Let us work together to ensure that every journey ends safely. No life should be lost due to reckless driving or negligence, especially when conditions require us to be extra careful,” MEC Thomo added.
