KNP Introduces Gate Quotas Due to Flood Damage
The Kruger National Park (KNP) has implemented a gate quota system with immediate effect following increased overnight rainfall that caused further damage to park roads and infrastructure.
nnnnAccording to park management, the decision was taken in the interest of visitor safety and effective traffic control, as persistent rain continues to affect large parts of the park. The quota system will apply at Malelane Gate, Numbi Gate and Paul Kruger Gate, and includes all Open Safari Vehicles (OSVs) entering the park.
nnnnVisitors have been urged to ensure that their vehicles have sufficient fuel, as filling stations at camps may be affected by the ongoing adverse weather conditions.
nnnnPark authorities confirmed that essential delivery vehicles, airport transfers—provided proof of a valid flight ticket is presented—and official vehicles will be permitted entry only through Paul Kruger Gate.
nnnnSeveral routes and gates remain closed due to flooding and safety concerns. The Skukuza to Phabeni Gate route is currently closed after a stream cut off access along the S1 road, rendering Phabeni Gate inaccessible via Skukuza at this stage.
nnnnIn addition, Orpen Gate will remain closed until further notice due to safety risks. The northern section of the park is also inaccessible, resulting in the closure of all northern gates.
nnnnThe park’s managing authority, SANParks, said it continues to closely monitor weather conditions, road safety and infrastructure damage. Further updates will be communicated as the situation develops.
nnnnVisitors planning trips to the park are advised to monitor official SANParks communication channels for the latest information and to comply with all safety instructions while the severe weather persists.
