Fifteen Suspects Arrested in Mining Crackdown Fifteen suspects, aged between 18 and 47, were arrested in Pilgrim’s Rest (Colombia and Gold Reef City) on 11 April 2025 during the continued rollout of Operation Vala Umgodi in Mpumalanga.
nnnnAmong the arrested individuals, 14 suspects were charged with contravening the Immigration Act of South Africa. Of those, four were also charged for possession of gold-bearing material. In addition, one South African national was separately charged for being in possession of gold-bearing material.
nnnnThe arrests followed an intelligence-driven operation conducted by SAPS members from Combat and Proactive Environments, supported by Phoenix Security. The team acted on reliable information and swiftly executed the operation at the illegal mining sites.
nnnnSeveral items believed to be used in illegal mining activities were confiscated, including gas cylinders, gold-bearing material, generators, jackhammers, and other unauthorised mining equipment. These tools are commonly used in unauthorised mining operations in the region, often causing significant environmental damage and posing safety risks.
nnnnThe arrested suspects are expected to appear before the Pilgrim’s Rest Periodical Court on 14 April 2025, where they will face charges relating to the Immigration Act and the illegal possession of gold-bearing material.
nnnnThe Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, has applauded the team’s efforts and reinforced the province’s commitment to rooting out illegal mining and undocumented immigration.
nnnn“Operation Vala Umgodi continues to yield positive results. We commend the dedication and professionalism of our members who are working tirelessly to dismantle illegal mining operations and arrest undocumented individuals. This operation is not only about arrests—it is about restoring law and order and protecting our natural resources,” said General Mkhwanazi.
nnnnHe further urged communities to work with law enforcement agencies by reporting suspicious activities related to illegal mining, and highlighted the importance of protecting the province’s mineral wealth from exploitation and criminal syndicates.
nnnnOperation Vala Umgodi, which has been rolled out in various hotspots across Mpumalanga, forms part of a national strategy to disrupt illicit mining networks and strengthen border control enforcement in mining regions.
nnnnPolice investigations are continuing, and more arrests are expected as part of the operation’s next phase.
