Driver in Court for Child Rape Allegation
A 66-year-old man from Springs village, Botlokwa, has appeared in the Morebeng Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 1 October, following allegations that he raped a three-year-old girl.
nnnnThe accused, who works as a transport driver for a local crèche, was arrested by the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) in Polokwane on Monday, 29 September. He has been remanded in custody until 8 October for a formal bail application.
nnnnAccording to Limpopo police, the incident occurred on Friday, 25 September. Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the child was dropped off later than usual, after which her guardian noticed she was restless and in pain. She was taken to a medical facility, where doctors confirmed she had been raped.
nnnnInvestigations revealed that the suspect, who is married to the crèche owner, was responsible for transporting children. A case was initially opened at the Botlokwa police station before being transferred to the specialised FCS Unit.
nnnnProvincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe commended the swift action of investigators but condemned the brutality of the crime.
“We will ensure a thorough investigation so that the perpetrator is held accountable, while the victim is supported and protected every step of the way,” she said.
Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Violet Mathye, also expressed outrage.
“We must ensure that those entrusted with the care and transportation of our children undergo thorough background checks and are continuously monitored. When violence is inflicted upon a child, it is an assault on the very fabric of our society,” her statement read.
