Anthrax Cases Reported in Kruger Park

South African National Parks (SANParks) has confirmed localised anthrax cases in the Kruger National Park (KNP), assuring visitors there is no cause for alarm.

According to SANParks, anthrax is endemic to the region and sporadic cases are recorded annually, especially in the northern areas. This year, kudu and buffalo have been most affected, which officials describe as typical and not a threat to biodiversity or species survival.

Visitors remain safe as anthrax requires direct contact to spread. SANParks reminded the public that tourists are not permitted to leave vehicles outside designated areas and that guided activities are conducted by trained professionals. Tourists are also urged not to approach or touch dead animals, a rule already in place.

Veterinary teams are monitoring the situation closely and will remove or treat carcasses if they pose a risk. SANParks has also notified the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, alongside State Veterinary authorities.

Officials expect the outbreak to subside with the first rains, following the disease’s natural cycle. SANParks emphasised that tourism activities continue as normal and the park remains safe for all visitors.
