Aid Boosts Kruger Flood Relief

Humanitarian aid has been received to support communities, staff and guests affected by recent flooding in and around the Kruger National Park (KNP).

SANParks said the assistance includes food and personal hygiene parcels, water, blankets, cleaning materials, dehydrated soup hampers and financial support — all aimed at strengthening ongoing relief and recovery efforts in flood-hit areas.

Support has so far been received from the SANParks Honorary Rangers, assisted by donations of funds and goods from local businesses including Checkers Nelspruit, Pick n Pay Nelspruit and Malelane, and Spar Nelspruit. Additional contributions have been made by Christian Aid Relief (CARE), the Gift of the Givers Foundation, DLS Safari, MUBZ Relief, Ford Nelspruit, and various private entities.

Since 19 January 2026, approximately 1,500 hampers have been distributed to those most in need within the KNP, SANParks confirmed. The aid is intended to address immediate and urgent needs of vulnerable households, while also helping affected families regain stability in the weeks ahead.

SANParks said the humanitarian support forms part of broader efforts to alleviate hardship, restore dignity and promote resilience within impacted communities inside the park and along the Kruger’s borders. The organisation reiterated its commitment to working with partners to ensure transparent, fair and efficient distribution of all donated resources.

The relief drive comes as SANParks intensifies longer-term plans to rebuild damaged infrastructure and restore operations in areas affected by extreme weather. The park is also positioning these recovery measures within a wider conservation and climate-risk response, recognising that severe weather events are increasingly placing pressure on protected areas and the communities that depend on them.

SANParks recently launched the Kruger Recovery Fund through the Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment. The fund is intended to receive donations to support recovery and rebuilding projects within the park, with the aim of protecting KNP’s long-term sustainability as a national heritage asset, a major economic driver, and a symbol of South Africa’s commitment to conservation.

SANParks thanked donors, partners and volunteers for their solidarity and continued support during what it described as a challenging period for the park and surrounding communities.
