January 16, 2025Middelburg Court Sentences Officer for Corruption
The Middelburg Commercial Crimes Court sentenced Vilakazi on January 13 following a prolonged investigation into bribery by law enforcement officers in Steve Tshwete Local Municipality. The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), in collaboration with Serious Corruption Investigation, Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), and Crime Intelligence, carried out the operation.
Provincial Hawks spokesperson, Warrant Officer Thandi Tshabalala, commended the multi-disciplinary team. “The operation, conducted between 2018 and 2019, targeted officers taking bribes from motorists,” said Tshabalala. Vilakazi was arrested in June 2019 and convicted of corruption on July 17, 2024.
“This sentencing serves as a stern warning to corrupt officials. We are committed to rooting out corruption,” Tshabalala added.
Alleged Bribery in Tshwane
In November 2024, a Tshwane Metro Police officer was caught on camera allegedly soliciting a bribe from a woman passenger. The officer was recorded directing the woman to withdraw money from an ATM. The video showed the woman displaying cash, though it did not capture her handing it over to the officer.
The Justice, Crime Prevention, and Security Cluster responded by serving the officer with a notice of intention to suspend. He has been required to justify why he should not face suspension.
Commitment to Eradicating Corruption
Authorities emphasize that these cases highlight their resolve to combat corruption. Officials warn that such behavior undermines public trust and justice, and they remain vigilant in holding offenders accountable.
