President Cyril Ramaphosa pledged to create 500,000 jobs per year at the ANC’s election manifesto launch, despite South Africa’s rising unemployment rate.
The ruling party promised to “create and sustain” 2.5 million work opportunities over the next five years. The jobs plan was unveiled at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.
The ANC said the jobs will involve public service delivery in communities via the Presidential Employment Stimulus, funding for non-profits, expanded youth service with the military, and opportunities for small businesses and entrepreneurs in townships and rural areas.
The manifesto focuses on opportunities for women, youth, and people with disabilities. Recent graduates and unemployed doctors will also be prioritized, along with 10,000 new police recruits and IT professionals at Home Affairs.
President Ramaphosa acknowledged the country’s jobs crisis but said the ANC’s plan can make a dent through public works programs and small business support. Critics question whether the targets are achievable given the economic headwinds.
The jobs pledge will be a centrepiece of the ANC’s reelection campaign. With unemployment over 30%, the party is under pressure to deliver as voters decide whether the ANC deserves another term.
