The African National Congress (ANC) is challenging the registration of the uMkhonto
weSizwe (MK) Party in the Electoral Court in Bloemfontein on Tuesday. In its court
application, the ANC alleges procedural flaws in how the Deputy Chief Electoral Officer,
Mawethu Mosery, registered the MK Party.
The MK Party, backed by former President Jacob Zuma, has maintained that its registration
is lawful according to court papers filed. The ANC argues that the court’s ruling will play a
crucial role in preserving the integrity of the electoral system.
The MK Party garnered significant attention in December when Zuma announced his
support, leading to his subsequent suspension from the ANC. The Independent Electoral
Commission’s (IEC) deputy chairperson, Janet Love, stated in February that the commission
must proceed based on existing documentation and legislation.
“The issue of the name of the MK Party and the identification is not an issue the commission
is cited in. It’s a matter that is in the High Court, and it is not something, again, that we can
control. It is something that is before that court,” Love said.
The outcome of this case could have far-reaching implications for the upcoming elections
and the political landscape in South Africa.
