October 12, 2023After shooting and killing a 51-year-old man, the security officer allegedly turned the gun on himself. On Wednesday morning, 11 October 2023, at about 07:00, the victim was on his way to work in Sonpark, Nelspruit.
According to the information, the victim was on his way to work when he was called by a 41-year-old security personnel who was driving a company car.
Preliminary investigation revealed that both the victim and the security guards knew each other as the security guard called the victim by his clan name. It also alleged that about a month ago the security guard once visited the victim and warned him to stay away from his girlfriend.
The two allegedly had a heated argument whilst the victim’s friend proceeded to work. According to the victim’s friend, he heard gunshots. When turning back to investigate, he was shocked to find his friend lying on the ground, with gunshot wounds and his body covered with blood. The security guard drove off from the scene and moments later he turned the gun on himself taking his own life.
The body of the security guard was discovered in a separate part of town. Paramedics declared both the victim and the security guard dead at separate locations. Nelspruit police are investigating the murder and holding an inquest.
The South African Police Service in Mpumalanga condemned the incident and called upon community members to seek professional assistance when encountering challenges in life.
