Schools literacy competition

Schools from Bohlabela district competed in a literacy competition on 01 August at Numbi conference center.

The pupils were from grades 6 & 9 and were competing in poetry, public speaking; drama and reading.

The competition was in English and Vernacular languages.

The competition started from school level, circuit level, sub-district level and district level and the district winners will go through to provincial.

According to the chief educational specialist from GET, the purpose of the competition is to strengthen curriculum activities, promote classroom learning activities, reduce illiteracy among the youth and to improve literacy in schools.

The competition will also help educators to understand where the pupils are lacking so that they can help them improve.

30 schools in the district participated in the competition and Bushbuckridge was represented by Eric Nxumalo high school in public speaking, Pikaniso primary school in story telling in Tsonga, Njonjela Primary school reading in English, Hlomani high School English drama.     

Mr. Moloto a provincial representative from department of education emphasized that schools should be seen as the centre for knowledge and skills, he also encouraged the learners to work hard at school, and also urged teachers to do their jobs to improve the pass rate especially in the Bohlabela district.
